Our Story

My name is John, and I’m in charge of Walks 101. I’m a travel industry professional with extensive experience giving tours in Europe, the USA, and Australia. Here’s a quick overview of my story.

In 2009, I was a year out of university and unable to hold down a media job in the midst of the global financial crisis. Fed up with the job market, I left my home in Minnesota, USA, to take a year off. Armed with my Irish dual citizenship, I moved to Galway. Along the way, I forgot to go home.

In 2010, I took my first travel industry job as a night porter at a Welsh hostel. Since then, I’ve worked as a tour guide, brand manager, and operations manager at a variety of major travel companies including Busabout, Sail Croatia, Med Experience, Expat Explore, and Urban Adventures.

Amidst my European travels, I fell victim to a fate all too common amongst backpackers — I fell in love with an Australian. I’ve been visiting “Oz” since 2012, but in 2016 my partner and I finally decided to settle in Melbourne.

During my travels in Europe, I was inspired by the plethora of free walking tour companies operating in just about every major city. When I arrived to Australia, I wanted to bring the free tour concept with me. Early in 2017, Walks 101 was born.

I’ve been immediately blown away by the popularity of the concept and happy to recruit a team of highly knowledgeable, entertaining, and funny guides. Each guide brings their own unique sensibility to their Melbourne walking tour, and it has been a joy leading such a qualified team.

We’re a small, family owned business, we believe in giving every one of our guests a tour they won’t soon forget. We hope to see you on one of our tours soon.
